THE STORY BEHIND THE BUSINESS:

Our family started in the scrap/recycling business in 1984. After two years of a small scale business with just a pick-up truck, a few hundred dollars, and a small building, we decided there was money to be made. In 1984, we acquired a small business loan and purchased an abandoned warehouse, with no roof and half the walls gone. We turned it into what it is today.
In 1988, after much work, time and dedication, Portland Recycling officially opened. The business grew at a very rapid pace. In 1989, we incorporated. Shortly after that, we had generated enough money to pay off all loans and continue operations solely on revenue.
In 1997, we purchased the property next to ours and constructed a 40’x 50’ warehouse.
In 1999, I purchased the business from my father. I purchased two more trucks and various equipment needed. At that time the company was up to 15 employees. Business was doing great. I made enough money to pay off the business buy-out note by February 2006.
In August 2006, I purchased the remaining property from my father and was able to have it paid off by August 2013. This property consisted of two acres, a two story building with 882 square feet of office space, 3,304 square feet of shop/receiving warehouse space, and the additional storage warehouse with 2,122 square feet.
In November 2009, I purchased the gravel parking lot across the street which is .038 acres.
We ranked #9 with 3.4 million in sales for 2005 and 2006 was our first year in Business First Fast 50. We ranked #7 with almost 7 million in sales. This has been a very good and prospering business for our family.
The scrap market has its ups and downs. The Key to success is when things are really booming, which will be for about eight years; prepare yourself for the down side, which usually last about two years.
After 30 years in this business, I have achieved many goals in my life. Now I feel it is time for me to retire and relax and enjoy the rest of what life has to offer. Without being involved in this business, I would have never had the opportunity. It has truly been a blessing. I feel sure that if someone would take over this land and business opportunity, they would have the same results. Granted it will take some hard work and dedication, but the reward is worth it in the end. MY dad always said, “If it comes easy, it ain’t worth having.”
Best of Luck To All
